Coverage
Road trips and city breaks often cross North American borders — Seattle to Vancouver, or San Diego to Tijuana. A North America plan covers all three countries with one eSIM, which is simpler than separate country plans if you cross even once.
Major cities and highways in the USA, Canada and Mexico generally have good 4G/5G coverage.
Remote areas — national parks, northern Canada, and rural Mexico — can have long stretches without signal.
Coverage near borders can switch between countries; a regional plan avoids surprises when it does.
Countries commonly covered (3)
Country lists vary by plan — check each plan's coverage before buying.
Regional plans connect to a partner network in each covered country. The networks used vary by country and provider.
General reference information. The network a specific eSIM uses is shown on the plan once confirmed by the provider.

Japan Travel eSIM
I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.

International Travel
Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.

Data Roaming
Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.
Emily R.
Some US, Canadian and Mexican carriers include the other two countries in their plans; visitors from elsewhere usually pay international roaming rates.
US networks retired 3G in 2022, so phones need 4G/LTE support to work reliably.
Most North America travel eSIMs are data-only and don't include a local number.
Download offline maps for national parks and long rural drives.
Check the plan covers all three countries if you might take a day trip across a border.
Cruise ships along the coast may switch to maritime networks billed separately.
FAQ
Regional North America plans usually cover the USA, Canada and Mexico. Always confirm the list on the specific plan.
If you'll stay in the USA only, a country plan is simpler. If you might cross into Canada or Mexico, a regional plan avoids a second purchase.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.
Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
