Choosing a plan

Country plan or regional plan?

Start with your route. One country usually means a country plan; several borders usually mean a regional plan.

Country plan

One destination

  • You're visiting one country
  • You want the simplest setup
  • Often more data per dollar for one country
  • Needs another plan if you cross a border
See an example: e.g. Japan eSIM

Regional plan

Several countries

  • Rail trips, road trips and multi-stop itineraries
  • One installation for every border
  • No new plan at each stop
  • Check every country on your route is covered
See an example: e.g. Europe eSIM

Data amount

How much data will you need?

Rough guides based on typical use — actual use depends on your apps and settings. Add a buffer for unexpected use.

Data roaming rules by region

How roaming typically works in each region — always confirm your own carrier's terms.

International roaming guide
  • EU / EEA

EU/EEA SIMs generally roam at domestic rates under Roam Like at Home, subject to fair use. Visitors from elsewhere pay their carrier's rates.

  • United Kingdom

EU roaming rules no longer apply to the UK. Whether it's included depends on your carrier.

  • Turkey & Morocco

Outside the EU, so EU allowances don't apply automatically. Check your carrier's non-EU rates.

  • Middle East

Roaming is billed by your carrier. Some internet calling features have historically been restricted in parts of the region.

  • Americas

No region-wide rules. US networks need 4G/LTE phones (3G was retired). Some carriers bundle the USA, Canada and Mexico.

  • Asia & Oceania

Prices vary widely by carrier and country. Check whether mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau are covered separately.

FAQ

Destination questions

Can't find an answer? See all FAQs or contact us.

What if my destination isn't listed?

Check whether a regional plan such as Europe, Asia & Oceania or Global covers it — country lists are shown on each plan. More destinations are added over time.

Should I choose a country or a regional plan?

A country plan is simplest for one destination. A regional plan is more convenient if you'll cross borders. Always check that every country on your route is included. See international eSIM types.

Does a Europe eSIM cover the UK and Switzerland?

Not always. Both are outside EU roaming rules, so providers treat them differently. Check the plan's country list before buying.

Do travel eSIMs include a phone number?

Most are data-only. You can keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use messaging apps over the eSIM's data.

When should I buy and install my eSIM?

A day or two before you travel, on reliable Wi-Fi. Check whether validity starts at installation or when the eSIM first connects abroad.

Are the prices on this page live?

Not yet — prices shown are sample data while the site is being built, and are labelled as such. Live prices will appear once a plan provider is connected.
