Coverage

Coverage in France

France has four national mobile operators and broad 4G coverage across cities, highways and most tourist regions. Whether you need a travel eSIM mostly depends on where your current SIM comes from: EU/EEA visitors often roam at domestic rates, while visitors from elsewhere may face their carrier's international roaming pricing.

  • Coverage is strongest in cities such as Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux and Nice, and along the main motorway and high-speed rail corridors.

  • Mountain areas in the Alps and Pyrenees, and some rural parts of central France, can have weaker signal or slower speeds, especially in valleys.

  • If you are visiting several countries, a regional Europe plan may be simpler than separate country plans.

What travelers say

4.9 out of 5 from 4 customer reviews

  • Japan Travel eSIM

I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.

    Sarah M.

  • International Travel

Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.

    James T.

  • Data Roaming

Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.

    Emily R.

Data roaming in France

If your SIM is from an EU/EEA operator, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules generally let you use your domestic allowance here without extra roaming charges, subject to your operator's fair-use policy. Travelers from outside the EU/EEA are billed according to their own carrier's international roaming terms.

For travelers from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia and elsewhere, costs depend entirely on the home carrier: some include France in an international pass, others charge per day or per megabyte.

Monaco is a separate country that is not part of the EU. Some plans that cover France do not cover Monaco, so check coverage if you plan a day trip along the Riviera.

France connectivity tips

  • 01

Download offline maps for rural drives and hiking areas before leaving Wi-Fi.

  • 02

Many cafés, hotels and train stations offer Wi-Fi, but public networks may require a sign-in page and can be slow at busy times.

  • 03

If you take the train through the Channel Tunnel or a ferry, your phone may briefly connect to a UK network or a maritime network — keep an eye on which network is active.

  • 04

Keep your home SIM active for SMS verification codes if your bank relies on them.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the France eSIM

Do I need an eSIM for France if I have an EU SIM card?

Often not. EU/EEA SIM cards generally roam in France under Roam Like at Home rules. A travel eSIM may still be useful if your domestic allowance is small or your operator applies a strict fair-use limit.

Does a France eSIM work in Monaco?

Not always. Monaco is outside the EU and some plans exclude it. Check the coverage list of the specific plan before you travel.

Which networks does a France travel eSIM use?

It depends on the provider. Travel eSIMs usually connect through agreements with one or more of the national operators (Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom or Free Mobile). The network is shown in the plan details when the provider confirms it.

Can I keep my regular number while using a France eSIM?

On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.

When should I install my France eSIM?

Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
