Coverage
The United States is large, and mobile coverage varies more than many visitors expect. Cities and interstate highways are generally well covered by the three national networks, while national parks, deserts and mountain areas can have long stretches with little or no signal.
Strong 4G/5G coverage in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Las Vegas and San Francisco.
Coverage along interstate highways is generally good, but can drop between towns in rural states.
Many national parks (for example in Utah, Wyoming, California and Alaska) have limited or no coverage in large areas. Plan to be offline for parts of park visits.

Data Roaming
Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.

Japan Travel eSIM
I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.
Sarah M.
International Travel
Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.

US networks retired their 3G services in 2022. Your phone needs 4G/LTE support — and ideally VoLTE for calls — to work reliably in the US.
Roaming costs for visitors depend on the home carrier. Some carriers include the US in travel passes; others charge per megabyte, which can add up quickly with maps and video.
Travel eSIMs for the USA are usually data-only, so calls and SMS to your regular number still go through your home SIM (and may be charged as roaming).
Download offline maps before visiting national parks or driving long rural routes.
Ride-hailing and many restaurant or event apps work best with mobile data — check the app works before arriving.
If you visit Canada or Mexico on the same trip, a USA-only plan will usually not work there. Consider a North America plan.
Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and airports, but often requires a sign-in page.
FAQ
Usually not. USA-only plans cover the United States. If your trip includes Canada or Mexico, look for a plan that explicitly lists those countries.
Partially. Visitor centres and lodges may have coverage or Wi-Fi, but large parts of many parks have no signal. Download offline maps and trail information in advance.
No. A 4G/LTE phone works, but 3G-only phones do not because US 3G networks have been shut down.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. You can keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS while using the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on the home line to avoid data charges.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.
Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
