Data roaming basics

What roaming is, how it works and what your phone is telling you.

What is data roaming?

Data roaming is when your phone uses mobile internet through a network that isn't your carrier's own — usually because you're in another country. Read the complete data roaming guide.

What does data roaming mean?

It means your phone is allowed to use, or is using, mobile data on a partner network outside your carrier's home network. See what data roaming means on your phone.

How does data roaming work?

Your phone connects to a partner network abroad. That network checks with your home carrier that you're allowed to roam, carries your data, and reports your usage back so your carrier can bill you. See how data roaming works.

Should data roaming be on or off?

Keep it off on any line where roaming isn't included or where you don't want roaming charges. Turn it on when roaming is included in your plan, or for a travel eSIM line that needs it to connect.

What happens when I turn off data roaming?

Your phone stops using mobile data on foreign networks. Wi-Fi still works, and calls and texts can usually still be used, though they may be charged. See how to turn off data roaming.

Can I still get calls and texts with data roaming off?

Usually yes. The Data Roaming switch only controls mobile data, so calls and SMS can still roam — and may be charged. To block all cellular use, turn on airplane mode and then switch Wi-Fi back on.

What does the R next to my signal bars mean?

On many Android phones, an R shows that you're connected to a network other than your carrier's own — in other words, you're roaming. See what data roaming means on your phone.

Why does my phone say SOS only or No service abroad?

Your phone couldn't register on a network your SIM is allowed to use. Roaming may not be enabled on your account, or there may be no partner network where you are. Try restarting, or select a network manually.

Should I turn off data roaming at home?

It usually makes little difference at home. Some carriers use domestic roaming in areas they don't cover themselves, so leaving it on at home may be needed for coverage there.

How do I turn off data roaming on iPhone?

Go to Settings → Cellular → Cellular Data Options (or Mobile Data Options) and switch Data Roaming off. On iPhones with two lines, choose the line first. Full steps: how to turn off data roaming.

How do I turn off data roaming on Android?

On Samsung Galaxy: Settings → Connections → Mobile networks → Data roaming. On Google Pixel: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Roaming. On other phones, search for "roaming" in Settings.

What's the difference between data roaming and mobile data?

Mobile data turns cellular internet on or off everywhere. Data roaming only controls whether your phone may use mobile data on networks outside your carrier's own. See data roaming vs mobile data.

Is airplane mode enough to avoid roaming charges?

Yes. Airplane mode blocks all cellular use — data, calls and texts. You can switch Wi-Fi back on while airplane mode stays on, so you can still get online on Wi-Fi.

I have two SIMs. Which line should have data roaming on?

Keep it off on your home line if roaming isn't included, and turn it on for a travel eSIM line if the provider asks. Also turn off automatic data switching so your phone doesn't fall back to your home line.

Does GPS work with data roaming off?

Yes. GPS doesn't need mobile data, so offline maps can still show where you are. Online maps need Wi-Fi or another data connection to load new areas.

How can I check that data roaming is really off?

Turn Wi-Fi off and try to open a website — it shouldn't load over your home line. You can also reset your mobile data counter before you travel and check that it isn't increasing.

Costs & charges

What roaming can cost and how to stay in control.

Does data roaming cost money?

It can. Some plans include roaming in certain countries; others charge a daily fee or per megabyte. Costs depend on your carrier, plan and destination. Learn more about roaming charges.

Why was my roaming bill higher than expected?

The most common causes are pay-per-use pricing combined with background data — photo backups, app updates and video autoplay — or a daily pass being triggered on more days than expected. Usage alerts and Low Data Mode help prevent this.

Is roaming free in the EU?

For customers of EU/EEA operators traveling within the EU/EEA, "Roam Like at Home" rules generally mean no extra roaming charges, subject to fair use. Countries such as Switzerland and the UK aren't covered by these rules. See international data roaming.

How can I avoid international roaming charges?

Check your carrier's roaming terms, turn off data roaming where needed, use Wi-Fi for heavy use, reduce background data, and consider a travel eSIM or local SIM. Use our checklist.

Am I charged for incoming calls while roaming?

With some carriers, yes — including calls that go to voicemail. Others include incoming calls in roaming passes. Check your carrier's roaming terms for your destination.

How much mobile data will I use abroad?

It depends on what you do. Messaging uses very little, maps use a few to tens of MB per hour, and video can use around 0.5–1 GB per hour or more. See how much data you need abroad.

What is a roaming daily pass?

A flat fee for each day you use your phone abroad. Check what triggers the charge — with some carriers, any data use at all, even an automatic app refresh, starts that day's fee.

Am I charged for receiving data, not just sending it?

Yes. Mobile data is charged by volume in both directions — downloads count just as much as uploads.

Is there a spending limit on roaming data?

EU operators must offer a monthly cut-off limit for roaming data — by default up to €50 (excluding VAT) unless you choose another — and warn you as you approach it. Elsewhere, check your carrier's app for alerts and caps.

How can I estimate what roaming will cost me?

Find your carrier's pricing model for your destination, estimate your daily data use, count the days you'll use data, then apply the price. Our guide to data roaming charges walks through it.

How roaming charges work

Roaming abroad

Regional rules, borders, cruise ships and flights.

What is international data roaming?

Using mobile data in a country other than the one where your SIM was issued. Rules and prices vary by region — see international data roaming.

Are Switzerland and the UK covered by EU roaming rules?

Not by law. Switzerland isn't in the EU or EEA, and EU roaming rules stopped applying to the UK after Brexit. Some operators include them anyway, so check your plan.

Can I use my phone on a cruise ship?

Yes, but at sea your phone may connect to a maritime network that's billed separately, often at high rates. Use airplane mode with Wi-Fi on if you only want the ship's Wi-Fi.

Can I use mobile data on a plane?

Some airlines offer in-flight mobile service, but it runs on its own network and is usually billed separately from roaming bundles. In-flight Wi-Fi is often the clearer option — check its price first.

Can I roam without leaving my country?

Yes, near a border. Your phone may connect to a neighbouring country's network before you cross. Select your home network manually, or turn off data roaming while you're near the border.

Why do websites think I'm still at home when I roam?

Most roaming data is routed back through your home carrier before it reaches the internet, so websites see a home-country IP address.

Is Wi-Fi a good alternative to roaming?

For heavy use like video calls, uploads and app updates, often yes — but Wi-Fi isn't available everywhere, and public networks need care. See data roaming vs Wi-Fi.

Travel eSIMs

Using a separate data plan abroad.

Does an eSIM use data roaming?

Many travel eSIMs connect through partner networks, so the eSIM line is technically roaming. The data comes from the prepaid eSIM plan, not your home carrier. See eSIM roaming explained.

Can I use an eSIM while traveling internationally?

Yes, if your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. You install a travel eSIM plan for your destination and use it for mobile data. See our guide to using an eSIM abroad.

Is an eSIM different from roaming?

Yes. Roaming uses your existing carrier and plan. A travel eSIM is a separate data plan from another provider. Neither is always cheaper or better — compare them in data roaming vs eSIM.

Is a travel eSIM cheaper than roaming?

Sometimes, not always. If roaming is included in your plan, it may cost nothing extra. If your carrier charges per day or per megabyte, a prepaid eSIM may cost less. Compare both for your trip.

How do I activate an eSIM?

Install it from your phone's cellular or SIM settings (usually by scanning a QR code), set it as your mobile data line, and turn on data roaming for that line if the provider requires it.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Look for an "Add eSIM" option in your phone's cellular or SIM settings, or an EID number in the About section. Your phone must also be unlocked from your carrier.

Does my phone need to be unlocked for a travel eSIM?

Yes. A phone locked to your carrier can't use another provider's eSIM. Check your phone's settings or ask your carrier whether it's unlocked before you buy.

When should I install my travel eSIM?

Usually a day or two before you travel, on reliable Wi-Fi. Check whether the plan's validity starts when you install it or when it first connects abroad.

Will I keep my phone number with a travel eSIM?

On dual-SIM phones, yes. Your regular SIM stays active for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.

Will WhatsApp and other messaging apps still work?

Yes. Messaging apps linked to your phone number keep working when another line provides mobile data — you don't need to re-register. See eSIM vs roaming.

Can I top up a travel eSIM?

Many providers let you add data to the same eSIM; others require a new eSIM. Check the provider's top-up policy before you remove the eSIM from your phone.

Should I use a travel eSIM or a local SIM?

A local SIM gives you a local number and is bought on arrival. A travel eSIM can be installed before you leave and keeps your physical SIM in place. Which suits you depends on your trip and your phone.
