Quick answer

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked before buying.
  • Install the eSIM on reliable Wi-Fi before you travel, then switch lines on arrival.
  • Keep your home SIM active for calls and SMS, with its data roaming off.
  • Don't delete the eSIM until you've finished with it — many can only be installed once.

Using an eSIM abroad: the short version

Check your phone, buy a plan that covers your whole route, install it at home on Wi-Fi, and switch your data line to it when you land. Your home number stays active for calls and texts. The rest of this guide walks through each stage, before, during and after your trip.

Not sure an eSIM is right for you? Compare it with roaming in data roaming vs eSIM.

Before your trip

1. Check your phone is compatible

  • Look for an "Add eSIM" option. iPhone: Settings → Cellular. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, or Settings → Connections → SIM manager.
  • Check for an EID. Many eSIM-capable phones show an EID number in Settings → General → About (iPhone) or Settings → About phone (Android).
  • Make sure your phone is unlocked. Phones locked to a carrier may not accept another provider's eSIM. Ask your carrier if you're unsure.

2. Choose a plan

Estimate your data needs with mobile data abroad, then pick a plan that covers every country on your route for the whole trip. Country, regional and global eSIMs explains the types, and our eSIM buying checklist lists what to compare.

3. Install the eSIM

Install it at home on reliable Wi-Fi — a day or two before departure is common. Check whether validity starts at installation or at first connection.

PhoneWhere to add an eSIM
iPhoneSettings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code, or the provider's install link
Samsung GalaxySettings → Connections → SIM manager → Add eSIM
Google PixelSettings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add SIM → Download a SIM instead

Label the new line clearly, for example "Travel".

Don't delete the eSIM by mistake

Many eSIM profiles can only be installed once. Don't remove the eSIM from your phone until you've finished using it.

How to set up your eSIM when you arrive

  1. Turn off airplane mode once you've landed.
  2. Set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line.
  3. Turn Data Roaming on for the eSIM line, if the provider requires it.
  4. Turn Data Roaming off for your home line.
  5. Turn off automatic data switching between lines.
  6. Open a web page to confirm data is working.

Why the eSIM needs roaming on is explained in eSIM roaming explained. If data doesn't work, see the troubleshooting steps in how to turn on data roaming.

During your trip

Check your usage every few days and top up before you run out.
  • Monitor usage in your phone's settings or the provider's app.
  • Top up before you run out, if the provider offers top-ups.
  • Keep your home SIM active to receive calls and SMS codes — these may be charged as roaming.
  • Use Wi-Fi for heavy tasks like backups and video — see data roaming vs Wi-Fi.

What changes for calls, texts and messaging apps is covered in eSIM vs roaming.

After your trip

  • Switch your mobile data line back to your home SIM.
  • Set Data Roaming back to your usual setting — see how to turn off data roaming.
  • Remove the eSIM profile once the plan has expired and you don't plan to top it up.

The bottom line

A travel eSIM takes about ten minutes to set up if you do it before you leave. Check compatibility, install on Wi-Fi, switch lines on arrival, and keep your home line for calls with roaming off. Ready? Start with your destination or compare eSIM plans.

Frequently asked questions

When should I install my travel eSIM?

Usually a day or two before you travel, on reliable Wi-Fi. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?

Look for an "Add eSIM" option in your phone's SIM or cellular settings, or an EID number in the About section. The phone must also be unlocked.

Can I reuse a travel eSIM on another trip?

Some providers let you top up the same eSIM for a new trip; others require a new eSIM. Check the provider's policy before removing it.

Do I need to turn on data roaming for my travel eSIM?

Often yes, for the eSIM line only. Most travel eSIMs connect through partner networks. Keep data roaming off on your home line.

What if my eSIM doesn't connect when I land?

Restart your phone, check the eSIM is your data line with roaming on, and try selecting a network manually. If it still doesn't work, contact the eSIM provider.
