Coverage
Spain has extensive 4G coverage and growing 5G in major cities. Travelers commonly combine city breaks with beach and island stays, so it is worth checking that a plan covers the Balearic and Canary Islands as well as the mainland.
Strong coverage in Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga and along the Mediterranean coast.
The Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza) and the Canary Islands are part of Spain and are usually included in Spain plans — confirm this in the plan details.
Sparsely populated inland areas and some mountain roads can have gaps; download offline maps before road trips.

Japan Travel eSIM
I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.
Sarah M.
International Travel
Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.
James T.
Data Roaming
Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.
Emily R.
If your SIM is from an EU/EEA operator, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules generally let you use your domestic allowance here without extra roaming charges, subject to your operator's fair-use policy. Travelers from outside the EU/EEA are billed according to their own carrier's international roaming terms.
The Canary Islands are an outermost region of the EU, and EU roaming rules apply there too.
Gibraltar (UK) and Andorra are not covered by EU roaming rules. Phones near the Gibraltar border may connect to a Gibraltar network automatically, which can trigger different charges.
If you visit Gibraltar or Andorra on a day trip, check whether your plan covers them, or turn off data roaming while you are there.
Ferries between the mainland and islands may switch your phone to a maritime network at sea. These networks are typically billed separately and can be expensive.
Many restaurants and hotels have Wi-Fi; ask staff for the password rather than joining open networks with similar names.
FAQ
Most Spain plans include the Canary and Balearic Islands because they are part of Spain's national networks, but always check the coverage list of the plan you choose.
Gibraltar has its own networks and is not covered by EU roaming rules. Near the border your phone might connect to a Gibraltar network. Manually select a Spanish network or check your plan's coverage.
Some plans support 5G in cities where the partner network offers it. Many travel plans are 4G/LTE. The network type is listed in each plan's details.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.
Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
