Coverage

Coverage in Italy

Italy's four national operators cover the large cities and most tourist routes well. Trips often mix city sightseeing with coastal towns, islands and countryside, where coverage can vary, so it is worth planning for a few patchy areas.

  • Good coverage in Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples and Bologna, and along high-speed rail lines.

  • Coastal areas such as the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre generally have coverage, though steep terrain can cause weak spots.

  • Rural Tuscany, mountain areas in the Dolomites and parts of Sardinia and Sicily can have slower speeds.

What travelers say

4.9 out of 5 from 4 customer reviews

  • Japan Travel eSIM

I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.

    Sarah M.

  • International Travel

Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.

    James T.

  • Data Roaming

Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.

    Emily R.

Data roaming in Italy

If your SIM is from an EU/EEA operator, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules generally let you use your domestic allowance here without extra roaming charges, subject to your operator's fair-use policy. Travelers from outside the EU/EEA are billed according to their own carrier's international roaming terms.

Vatican City is served by Italian networks in practice. San Marino is not an EU member and has its own operator, so some plans and carriers treat it differently — check before a day trip.

Ferries to Sardinia, Sicily, Greece or Croatia may switch your phone to a maritime network at sea, which is usually not part of roaming bundles.

Italy connectivity tips

  • 01

Download offline maps and train tickets before travelling between cities in case of weak signal in tunnels.

  • 02

Turn off data roaming or switch to airplane mode on ferries unless you have confirmed maritime coverage costs.

  • 03

Some museums require timed tickets on your phone — keep a screenshot as a backup.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the Italy eSIM

Does an Italy eSIM work in San Marino and the Vatican?

Vatican City uses Italian networks, so Italy plans normally work there. San Marino has its own operator and is not in the EU; coverage depends on the plan, so check its country list.

Will I have signal on the Amalfi Coast or in Cinque Terre?

Usually yes in towns, but the steep cliffs can create weak spots. Download maps and tickets in advance.

Can I use my phone on ferries in Italy?

Close to shore your phone may use land networks. Further out it can connect to a maritime network that is billed separately. Turning off data roaming or using airplane mode avoids unexpected charges.

Can I keep my regular number while using a Italy eSIM?

On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.

When should I install my Italy eSIM?

Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
