Coverage
Since the UK left the EU, EU roaming regulation no longer applies to trips between the UK and the EU. Many operators still include the UK in their roaming offers, but this is now a commercial decision rather than a legal requirement — so it is worth checking before you travel.
Strong 4G and expanding 5G in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow and other cities.
The London Underground has been adding mobile coverage on many lines and stations, though some sections may still have no signal.
The Scottish Highlands, parts of Wales and remote coastal areas can have limited coverage — download offline maps before driving.

Japan Travel eSIM
I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.
Sarah M.
International Travel
Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.
James T.
Data Roaming
Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.

EU "Roam Like at Home" rules do not apply to the UK. Some EU operators still include the UK at no extra cost; others charge a daily fee or treat it as a non-EU destination.
The Channel Islands (Jersey, Guernsey) and the Isle of Man are not part of the UK for many operators' roaming purposes. Check your plan if you visit them.
Visitors from outside Europe should check whether their carrier's international pass includes the UK and what the daily cost is.
Contactless payment is widely accepted, including on London public transport, so a working phone is very useful.
Download offline maps for the Highlands, the Lake District and national parks.
If you take a ferry to Ireland, France or the Channel Islands, watch for maritime networks at sea.
FAQ
No. EU roaming regulation stopped applying to the UK after Brexit. Some EU operators still include the UK in their allowances, but it depends on your specific plan.
Not always. These islands have their own networks, and many plans treat them separately. Check the plan's coverage list.
Many stations and some tunnel sections have mobile coverage, but not all. Plan for occasional gaps and keep tickets or directions offline.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.
Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
