Coverage
Germany has three established mobile networks plus a newer fourth network operator. Coverage in cities is generally strong, while rail and rural coverage has historically been less consistent, so offline preparation still pays off.
Strong coverage in Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne and other large cities.
Coverage on some intercity and regional train routes can drop in tunnels, forests and hilly regions. Many long-distance trains offer onboard Wi-Fi as a backup.
Rural areas, particularly in hilly or forested regions, can have slower speeds than cities.
Major mobile operators in Germany:
Telekom
Vodafone
O2Telefónica

Japan Travel eSIM
I used a travel eSIM during my trip to Japan and it was much easier than relying on international roaming. I activated it before my flight and had mobile data as soon as I arrived.
Sarah M.
International Travel
Having a separate data plan made things much simpler. I could keep my main SIM active for calls while using the travel eSIM for mobile data. No need to change physical SIM cards.
James T.
Data Roaming
Before my trip, I wasn't sure how data roaming charges worked. Using a travel eSIM gave me a separate data option and helped me keep track of my usage while traveling.
Emily R.
If your SIM is from an EU/EEA operator, EU "Roam Like at Home" rules generally let you use your domestic allowance here without extra roaming charges, subject to your operator's fair-use policy. Travelers from outside the EU/EEA are billed according to their own carrier's international roaming terms.
Germany borders nine countries. Near the Swiss border your phone may connect to a Swiss network. Switzerland is not part of EU roaming rules, so charges can differ.
Non-EU visitors should check whether their carrier's international pass includes Germany and how much high-speed data it allows per day.
Download your Deutsche Bahn tickets to your phone and keep them available offline.
Near the Swiss border, consider selecting a German network manually to avoid connecting to a Swiss one.
Cash is still common in some smaller shops — having maps and payment apps working helps, but carry a backup.
FAQ
It is improving but can still be patchy in tunnels and rural stretches. Long-distance trains often provide onboard Wi-Fi. Keep tickets and maps available offline.
A Germany-only plan usually does not cover neighbouring countries. If you are crossing borders, look at a regional Europe plan and confirm whether Switzerland is included.
Many travel plans allow tethering, but not all. The hotspot field on each plan card shows whether it is supported.
On most dual-SIM phones, yes. Keep your regular SIM active for calls and texts, and use the eSIM for data. Turn off data roaming on your regular line to avoid roaming data charges.
Install it before you travel while you have reliable Wi-Fi, then switch it on after you arrive. Check whether the plan's validity starts at installation or first connection.
