Best eSIM for Spain Travel in 2026

How to choose a Spain eSIM: networks, coverage from the cities to the islands, EU roaming, data needs, Gibraltar and setup before you fly.

Quick answer

  • Choose a plan on a major Spanish network; coverage is strong in cities, on the coasts and along main routes.
  • EU and EEA SIMs can usually roam in Spain at home rates; other travelers usually pay extra.
  • Gibraltar has its own networks, so a Spain plan may not work there.
  • Visiting Portugal or France too? A Europe plan covers the whole route with one eSIM.

Spain is easy to get around with a phone in your hand: high-speed trains between cities, tapas bars to look up, and beaches and mountain towns a short drive away. If your SIM comes from an EU country, you can probably roam at home rates. If it doesn't, roaming can get expensive fast, and that's where a travel eSIM earns its place.

This guide explains what makes the best eSIM for Spain: which networks to look for, how coverage varies between cities, islands and the interior, how much data you'll need and how to set everything up before you fly.

The Short Answer

For a trip to Spain alone, the best eSIM is a data plan on a major Spanish network, with enough data for your stay and a validity that starts when you arrive. If Spain is part of a longer trip through Portugal, France or the rest of Europe, a regional Europe plan is usually simpler than separate country plans.

At the time of writing, our Spain plans connect through Movistar and Orange, two of the country's largest networks. Each plan lists its networks, data and validity before you buy.

What Makes an eSIM Good for Spain

A major Spanish network

Spain's main mobile networks are Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Digi. All of them cover the big cities well, including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia and Málaga. A plan that can use more than one network gives you a better chance of signal in rural areas.

Enough data for your trip

Maps, messaging, restaurant searches and photo sharing make up most of a typical day. If you'll stream on long train rides or work from a laptop, size your plan up.

Validity that matches your dates

Our Spain plans run from a week to several months. Choose one that covers your whole stay, and check when it starts counting days.

Hotspot use

If you're sharing data with a laptop or travel companion, check that hotspot use is allowed. Every plan in the table above allows it.

Coverage Across Spain

Coverage is generally strong in cities, along the coasts and on the main roads and rail lines. Gaps are more likely in the sparsely populated interior, in mountain areas such as the Pyrenees, Picos de Europa and Sierra Nevada, and on some rural roads. On high-speed trains, data usually works but can drop briefly in tunnels.

The Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands are part of Spain, and coverage in their main towns and resorts is generally good. If you're heading to the Canaries, it's still worth checking that your plan covers them, because some providers list them separately.

How Much Data Do You Need in Spain?

Start with your own phone: check your mobile data use for a typical week, divide by seven and adjust for travel. You'll probably use more maps and fewer streaming hours if you're out exploring all day.

As a worked example, if you use around 600MB a day, a 10-day trip comes to about 6GB. Add a buffer for video calls and photo uploads, and a 10GB plan leaves comfortable room. Hotels and many cafés offer Wi-Fi for backups and big downloads.

eSIM vs Roaming vs a Local SIM in Spain

Roaming with your home carrier is often included for SIMs from other EU and EEA countries, thanks to the EU's roaming rules, though fair-use limits can apply. Travelers from elsewhere, including many UK plans since Brexit, usually pay extra. Check your carrier's rates; our guide to data roaming charges explains what to look for.

A Spanish SIM card can be good value for long stays. You'll need to buy it in a shop and show ID, and swap out your home SIM unless your phone has two slots.

A travel eSIM gives you data as soon as you land, with your home SIM still in place for calls and texts, and no shop visit.

Setting Up Your Spain eSIM

  1. Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked.
  2. Buy a plan that covers your whole stay, or a Europe plan if you're visiting other countries too.
  3. Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly.
  4. When you land, switch the eSIM on, set it as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for that line.
  5. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM.

Gibraltar isn't Spain

Gibraltar is a British territory with its own mobile networks. A Spain plan may not work there, so check your plan's coverage or use Wi-Fi if you're planning a day trip.

Tips for Staying Connected in Spain

  • Visiting Portugal or France too? A Europe plan can cover the whole route with one eSIM.
  • Download offline maps for the countryside. Rural roads and mountain areas can have long stretches without signal.
  • Use Wi-Fi for long train streams. Signal on high-speed lines can drop in tunnels.
  • Keep your home number reachable. With a dual-SIM phone, your regular SIM can stay on for calls and texts while the eSIM handles data.

Frequently asked questions

Which network is best for an eSIM in Spain?

Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Digi all cover the cities well. A plan that can use more than one network gives you a better chance in rural areas.

Does a Spain eSIM work in the Canary Islands?

The Canaries are part of Spain, and many Spain plans cover them, but some providers list them separately. Check the plan before you buy.

Will a Spain eSIM work in Gibraltar?

Not necessarily. Gibraltar is a British territory with its own networks. Check your plan's coverage, or rely on Wi-Fi for a day trip.

Do I need an eSIM if I have an EU SIM card?

Maybe not. EU and EEA SIMs can usually roam in Spain at home rates, subject to fair-use limits.

How much data do I need for a week in Spain?

At around 600MB a day, a week uses about 4GB. Add a buffer for video calls, streaming or working from a laptop.
